DNPWC's Achievements on Bird Conservation in Nepal
Among the 32 globally threatened birds found now in Nepal, four species are protected under the NPWC Act 1973. It is recommended that the other 28 species are also protected under the Act. Conservation action plans for White-rumped Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, Bengal Florican should be prepared and immediately implemented.
Bird Conservation Nepal and Birdlife International have identified 27 Important Bird Areas, among which 15 are protected. Complete coverage of all IBAs through the recognition of new protected areas and expansion of existing protected areas is an urgent step for the Government to take. Ghodaghodi lake areas, Phulchoki, Tamur valley, Dharan forests and Mai valley forests should be given to priority for designation as new protected areas.
The Department does not have a Research and Training Centre to develop the capacity of DNPWC staff to conserve and manage biodiversity. Establishment of such a centre is vital to train and strengthen human resources, as well as to facilitate the gathering of independent up to date information on the species and habitat conservation.
