Forest Management: An Improvement of Forest Condition and Economic Development (An example of Karri CF, Dang)

By Nagendra Prasad... - 11/21/2009

Introduction: Sal Forest is mixed with other associate species. Forest condition was good in terms of growing stock, with over matured and deformed trees of undesirable species. There was gap in different diameter classincluding regeneration of Sal species. Forest was dominated by Mallotus and Lagestromia (shadebearer) species that causes in changing forest composition from Sal to undesirable other shade bearerspecies. The objective of CF management is set by FUG i.e. production of good quality Sal timber.

Silvicultural Operations in 2062 Status after Silvicultural Operations in 2065

Forest Mangement Intervention: DFO staff and FUGC carried out forest inventory and report passed through FUG assembly and then approved by DFO. Removal of marked 4D trees and overmatured as selection felling. Mostly Mallotus (Sindure) and other shrubs removed for regeneration.

Type of Forest Product Within CFUG Outside CFUG Total(Rs.)

After two years in the felling and NTFP cultivated area Sal (3460/ha) and 5,133 seedlings/ha of khair and other species regenerated which is good indication of applying silvicultural system under improvement felling.

Forest operation area: about 50 ha
No of species felled: 31
No of Tree felled: 1260 out of 1350
Total Income: Rs 1537838
Employment generated equivalent to Rs. 550000
Employment persons days @200 =2750
Forest operation is carried out under the supervision of FUG and Range post staff

Conclusion: FUG needs support for scientific forest management. The management objectives of the CF are defined to produce good quality timber but that is not technically supported. Mostly protection oriented CF middle story is covered with shade bearer species. In such situation opening of canopy has created environment for natural regeneration. FUG realised that there is need of management rather only protection for the improvement of forest condition. Management interventions have created opportunity of income generation from supply of forest products and employment for the poor. After two years regeneration of Khair and Sal in felled area appeared abundantly that encouraged FUG for implementation of silvicultural operations.
