Abstract  

This book is a compilation of papers presented at a seminar held in Japan, organized by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) and hosted by the Government of Japan. Thirteen participants from eight member countries and four non-member countries, as well as seven resource speakers from FAO and Japan participated in the seminar. The objectives of the seminar were to: (1) assess the current status of forestry resources management in Asia and Pacific; (2) discuss policy measures and programmes for effective implementation of forestry resources management; and (3) exchange information and share experiences on the subject among the participants. The book comprises four parts. Part I contains a summary of findings, by country. Part II comprises seven resource papers, examining the current or potential status of forest resources, development, planning and management in the Asia- Pacific region, including papers specifically considering taungya, afforestation, community forestry, and public functions of forests. Part III comprises country papers, for Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga and Western Samoa. Part IV contains appendices (lists of speakers and participants).
