Insect pests intercepted in exotic planting material during quarantine processing in 2002

| Abstract | A total of 83662 samples of exotic germplasm of various crops were processed for quarantine clearance in New Delhi, India, during 2002. The samples included true seeds, rooted plants, cuttings, rhizomes, suckers, bulbs, nuts and tissue culture tubes. Visual examination revealed insect or mite infestation in 448 samples. The important interceptions included: Cryptolestis [ Cryptolestes ] sp. in Sesamum indicum from Uganda; Rhizopertha dominica [ Rhyzopertha dominica ] in Hordeum vulgare from Syria and Mexico; Sitophilus granarius in Triticum aestivum from USA; Sitophilus zeamais in Zea mays from Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand; Sitophilus oryzae in Sorghum bicolor from Brazil, Philippines, USA, and in Triticum aestivum from Nepal; staphylinid beetle in Sorghum bicolor from Canada; Tribolium castaneum in Sorghum bicolor and Triticum aestivum from Canada and Nepal. X-ray radiography of 449 samples revealed the infestation of 216 samples. The important interceptions included: Acanthoscelides obtectus in Phaseolus vulgaris from USA, Mexico and Peru; Bruchus ervi in Lens culinaris from Syria; Bruchus lentis in Lens culinaris from Syria and in Vicia faba from Afghanistan, Canada, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Ukraine and Yemen; Bruchus nubilis in Vicia faba from Ukraine; Bruchophagus mellipes in Sesbania spp. from the Philippines, Brazil and Ethiopia; Quadrastichodella eucalyptii [ Quadrastichodella nova ] and Bootanomiya [ Bootanomyia ] sp. in Eucalyptus sp. from Australia. |
