This paper presents the economic stakeholder analysis (ESA) as a methodological framework for assessing participatory forest management (PFM) stakeholder incentives; assesses some of the challenges in the main ESA stages; and discusses some of the controversial issues surrounding the application of economics in PFM situations in Nepal, Ghana, Bolivia, Mexico and Zimbabwe - particularly participation and the use of participatory rural appraisal or rapid rural appraisal methods.
