Abstract

Through a case study of the buffer zone development initiative at the Royal Chitwan National Park in Nepal, this paper illustrates that protected areas can accelerate the process of sustainable development in rural areas adjoining the park or reserve. The provision of a buffer zone has given residents near Chitwan National Park the opportunity to pursue sustainable livelihoods based on community forestry and ecotourism.
