Abstract  

This paper analyses the effectiveness of community management of copse forests in the hill region of Nepal. It presents: the major analytical issues of community or common property forest management and the research hypotheses; the sampling strategies used in the extensive study of forest management and the intensive study of the management of firewood collection, along with a description of the conditions and management rules of sample forests; and the summary of the policy implications synthesized from both studies.
