Needle morphological variation of Pinus merkusii in Central Aceh, Indonesia

Rajendra K.C.'s picture

I have just completed the report on my project work done in Central Aceh, Indonesia. The subject is quite interesting from genetic point of view however I did analyse only the needle morphological variation.

Abstract: The study on needle morphological variation within and among population of Pinus merkusii in central Aceh has been conducted in November, 2007 with the main objective of identifying the needle morphological variability of P. merkusii. The length of needles and fascicle, shape of the needle and stomata density are taken as the major traits to identify the variability. Altogether 1820 needles from 90 trees from 6 populations were collected and analysed for morphological traits. Out of these, 60 needles from 6 populations were microscopically studied for stomata density. The lengths and shape of needles are found significantly different according to population whereas the stomata density is found insignificant.

Deforestation and Global Carbon Budget

Rajendra K.C.'s picture

The CO2 in the global has been increasing annually. The anthropogenic activities are the main causes for Carbon increase. The burning of fossil fuels, uncontrolled industrial growths, deforestation etc are the major causes for atmospheric carbon increase. The forests have been decreasing with rampant size. Each year the global primary and secondary forests have been reduced tremendously in size effecting carbon growth, resulting global temperature increase causing green house effect and climatic change. In this aspect the attached file describes it in detail on the topic.

Does Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) contribute in the reduction of rural poverty?

Rajendra K.C.'s picture

The Community nearby the forest have benefits and difficulties due to the forest and wildlife. They can hence be considered as the major stakeholders of the forest. If they are given tenureship upon the forest, they can manage the forest properly benefiting themselves. But in many cases (for example in Africa, and Latin America), this is not taken as the best models. But, the example from Nepal clearly shows that if they are given full rights and empowerment, they can play vital roles in managing forest in sustainable way and benefitting their community and the nation.
