Diseases of Sissoo

a) Wilt disease

- Caused by Fusarium solani.

- Favored by high soil moisture in sites with poor drainage.

- Xylem cell is filled up by water & tree become drying.

Symptoms:

- Yellowing & death of leaves in acropetal succession up the tree.

- Leaves drop of rendering the branches increasingly bare.

- Outer sapwood exhibits a characteristic pink to reddish pink stain.

- Vessels are plugged with hyphae

- Unidentified toxic are produced.

Control measures

- Sissoo should be raised on a site have height textured soil with adequate soil moisture & good drainage.

- Nursery bed shouldn't be prepared in water logged area.

b) Root rot disease

- Caused by Gandoderma lucidum

- Common both in natural & plantation forest. & in both light & heavy textured soil.

- Mostly occurs on plantation in clearfelling site & hyphae are spreaded out by the old stumps.

Symptoms

- Tree becomes yellowing

- Sapwood decaying on root & butt region

- Brick coloured sporophore are seen on root or root butt region.

Control measures

- Applying control burning in the wet forest.

- Removing stumps after clear felling.

- Introduce resistant sps. like Bombax ceiba.

- Raised mixed plantation rather than the pure plantation of Khair- Sisoo.

- Making isolation trench :- Depth- 0.7m, Length- 0.3m

c) Leaf & Twig disease

- Common in nursery seedling

- Caused by Uredo sissoo & Marvelia sps.

Symptoms

- Appears rusted coloured spots in leaf

- Tree becomes leafless.

- Seedling becomes broom like structure.

Control measures

- Using Blitex in spring season in nursery

- spreading protectant fungicide in stump.

- Maintain air circulation in nursery bed.
