Learning Objectives

The purpose of the training workshop is to enable participants to write articles of moderate scientific rigour by linking experience, data, concepts and larger issues. Participants with interests in writing articles and scientific papers in a broad range of social and environmental sciences may wish to apply. By the end of the training workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand and apply key principles of good scientific writing
  • Structure your writing in a logical and coherent way
  • Understand how research, analysis and writing can be linked to practice and field experience
  • Identify and correct common mistakes in writing

Course topics

  • The art and science of scientific writing
  • Sources of knowledge and epistemological basis of scientific writing
  • Analyzing and interpreting qualitative data
  • Structure, flow and logic in scientific writing
  • Literature review and reading techniques
  • Organizing bibliography through endnote
  • Peer review, editing and publishing

Method

  • Lecture, group exercises, guided reading, paper writing

Duration

  • Five days of classrooms sessions (comprising seven lectures of one hour each)
  • Two hours of flexible mentoring support to each participant who decides to write a paper during the training period.

Fee

  • Rs 3500 for students, Rs 5500 for working professionals.

Selection of participants

  • 8 - 10 participants in a batch
  • Preference given to those having clear writing plans

Course Leader

  • Hemant Ojha (PhD in Development Studies, with over 50 papers published, including a dozen international peer-reviewed journal articles. Reviewer of various international journals; author/co-author/editor of six books. Founding editor of Journal of Forest and Livelihood. Designed and conducted scientific writing workshops).
