Projects in the Solukhumbu
Namaste,
Are there any ongoing forestry projects within the Everest Region. I am a social worker and volunteer in Kathmandu with six orphanages but I am also studying for a forestry degree. I hope to get in contact with someone in Nepal that is maybe hoping to set up a tree planting project in the Solukhumbu.
I am passionate about helping Nepal as I have truly fell in love with the country and it's people. I hope to spend an academic year in the area to study it's forests, regeneration and hopefully look towards the future to set up a project.
I am a hard worker, very determind and will continue to help Nepal. If you have any information I would be very greatful.
Many thanks,
Barry.

Tree planting is one of the
Tree planting is one of the major activities of WWF's Sagarmatha Community Agroforestry Project which is being implemented in the Bufferzone of Sagarmatha National Park. In the mean time, TMI is also trying to work in the same area, though I am not yet clear on what it is trying to work.
Hope it helps.

Many Thanks
Thank you very much for this information. I am now starting to email people and getting as much information as I can. I will be in Nepal for three weeks during April this year and, on my way to base camp, will try to visit these projects.
It is a dream of mine and with the support of people like yourselves is becoming more achievable every day. I have had a look at the WWFNepal website and there's some good info on there.
Update: I have just emailed WWFNepal and hopefully they have a project i can get involved with.
Thankyou again,
Barry
Dear Barry
Dear Barry
Hi.
Thanks for showing interest to work in Nepal..
I am not sure about where are you now either in Nepal or other country. There might be projects on National park and WWF/Nepal.
I suggest better you contact WWF/Nepal country office in Baluatar and Department of National Paark and Wild Life Conservation in Babarmahal, if you are in Kathmandu. You can visit their websites and find email and telephone number.

Thankyou everyone.
Hi,
I have emailed all that people have suggested and will wait for the responses. The WWF Nepal website gave me more ideas which is great. I am in the UK at the minute but will be in Nepal for three weeks during April. I will be going to Everest Base Camp and back in that time and hope to see and meet people undertaking project work.
The voluntary organisation that I work for in Nepal is called the Umbrella Foundation. And if anyone has time then have a look at the website. http://www.umbrellanepal.org/
Thanks again,
Barry
As far as I know the Natural
As far as I know the Natural resource management Sector programme funded by Danida was supporting District Forest office in Solukhumbu district mainly for FUG formation, CF awareness and hand over of national forest to local people. In upper Solukhumbu, WWF and the mountain institute (TMI), international organization are involved in agroforestry and other forestry activities mainly to improve the livelihood of the rural poor people. I am not sure which part of Solukhumbu disitrict you are interested to work? The upper solukhumbu regioin, most of the area is under the Sagarmatha National park and if your interested to do some research the lower Solukhumbe area where there is many communty forest user groups could be one potential area for your academic studies. Since from few years, Tourism for poverty reduction is working in lower part of Solukhumbu district mainly for ecotourism development and capacility building of local people for income generation activities and promotion of tourism.

Dear Barry
My information may be a little old, however, I am doing it may be it could be of some help little exploring might be needed. Dear Barry, there was a Danish NGO which came accross me for help regarding the forestry activities. I was then working with DANIDA. This was not a Forestry but a social project they were running. I would advise, please contact the DANISH embassy here in Nepal, they will have the information on it.
In the mean time, you could contact the US, British, UN and other offices in Kathmandu together with the INGOs like UMN, CARE, British volunteers and others. These definitely would have information for you as to whether there are any projects in the area. All the best in your search. While in Nepal if there is any thing that I or my institution can do to help you, I would be more than happy to do so. My address is as listed below. All the best.

Namaste Prayag
Namaste Prayag,
I have spoke to a man called Nick Ledgard who is involved with the himalayan trust and he has given me a good base to work on, as regards to research. The Himalayan trust has several tree nurseries within the solukhumbu.
I hope to spend close to a year within the Solukhumbu and this is where my probelm lies. I have been to Nepal many times but only for a few months at a time. I have been onto several embassy websites to see which visa i would need.
I will be in Nepal only for three weeks in April and i hope to visit people within that time. I will have a few days in Kathmandu, then to the Solukhumbu to see one of the nurseries near to Namche Bazaar, then back to kathmandu for a few days.
If it is okay i would like to get in contact when i arrive in Nepal.
Any help is much appreciated,
Dheri dhanyebaad,
Barry
