Waste or Resources?

Waste or Resources?

Waste Perception!

'Life in the Kathmandu Valley has been affected and the capital city has turned filthy as the solid waste generated in the city could not be collected and dumped properly' (RSS. Gorkhapatra, Nepal, February 19, 2007).The obstruction on collection and management of waste has always been head news in Nepali newspaper. As usual, even in this time team from Kathmandu Metropolitan city and office bearers of Sisdol Action Committee are having discussion, to solve the problems of former and fulfill the demands of later. Sisdol area is the current landfill site for the metropolitan waste product.

Representatives from Kathmandu Metropoliton Office have always treated waste as disposable matter. This is time to realize the potential negative impacts likely to occur on human health and safety. Bitter accidental incidents in Love canal, Niagara City, New York State, USA in 1977 and Cyanide Dumping, Nuneaton, Coventry, Warwickshire, UK in 1972 due to series of toxic waste dumping episodes (source: Paul T.Williams , (2005) Waste Treatment and Disposal ) cannot be ignored so early. Dumping wastes in the undisputed land is neither the permanent solution nor sustainable way of waste management. So, the government and the responsible authorities should achieve proper waste management practice.

The definition for waste can be subjective, what represents waste to one person may represent valuable resources to another (Paul T. Williams (2005), waste treatment and disposal). Waste is no more waste, it's valuable resource. Most of the practitioner in developed countries like UK and USA realise that Waste is plentiful, resources are rare.

One of the Strategies followed by European Union can be significant method to be recommended for the sustainable waste management in Nepal .As mentioned below there can be various action to overcome from waste , but the first priority should be Reduction of waste followed by RE-Use , Organic waste can be either Recycled or Composted on the basis of available sources, Recovery of Energy from Waste through various ways can be beneficial for supporting shortage of electricity, while there should be defensive action against desposing waste in the landfill site due to negative impact on health and unsustainable method of practice.
