Community forestry in Nepal: An ethical journey to sustainable livelihoods is now at crossroad?

Abstract:

Community Forestry (CF) has become a keyword in Nepal's forest management policy and practice since last twenty years. This programme has brought all stakeholders together with their contribution to help develop improved livelihoods through sustainable forest management but the performance of CF in last few years is disappointing because the programme is surviving under threats due to many circumstances. As sustainability of CF will decide the future pathway of Nepal's forestry dynamics and as it is a social issue rather than technical one, its worthy to review the whole programme from ethical perspective.

Being a social issue and dealt among different stakeholders, CF has become a complex process, and entangled in a web of social and cultural entities of different stakeholders. Here, I have tried to analyse this web and find out the knots. I believe that the only one way to undo these knots and to cure the cracks is to go through the ethical understanding where all stakeholders would play their role in an ethically justified way.
