Abstract

This paper presents the results from an on-farm research carried out by the Agricultural Research Station at two locations in Belhara, Pakhribas command area, of Dhankuta district, east Nepal. The study examined the feasibility of utilizing marginal terrace risers for fodder production without reducing cropland to sustain both livestock and crop production in the hills. This is an innovative way of addressing the continuous need of upland farmers for fodder to sustain livestock production, while maximizing the shading effect of fodder trees on crops. The survival and growth of fodder and forage species, dry and fresh matter production of forage crops, and the effect on maize of fodder grown in terrace riser are discussed.
