Abstract

The activities, successes, constraints and needs of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) engaged in agroforestry and related fields in Nepal are identified. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the head offices of NGOs in Kathmandu. Successful NGO initiatives include the involvement of women in agroforestry, the introduction of smokeless stoves and the integration of traditional management practices into projects. Constraints are identified as lack of technical training, shortage of seeds, lack of extension materials and inadequate cooperation between NGOs. The perceived needs of the NGOs were expressed to be in the areas of research, training, professional services, extension, tree tenure and networking. An appendix provides an outline of the activities of various NGOs.
