Dalbergia sissoo

Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. (Leguminosae, subfamily Papilionoideae) is a medium to large deciduous tree with a light crown. It can grow to 30 m in height and 80 cm in diameter, but is usually smaller.

Sissoo is native tree of Nepal. It is primarily found growing along river banks below 900 m elevation, but can ranges naturally up to 1500 m.

Due to its fast growth, quality timber, easy propagation and drought resistance, sissoo is the most favourable plantation species in Nepal. Due to a short rotation of timber harvesting of the sissoo, the profit from the plantation of sissoo is much bigger than agricultural crops.
