Standard rules governing breast height measurement

1.        On flat ground: Base should be marked by means of stick at 1.37 m above the ground level which will be marked by intersecting the horizontal and vertical lines. When a tree has a point mark to designate the B.H. point assume that the point of measurement is at the top of the point mark.

2.       On slopy ground: B.H. should be measured from uphill side.
3.       For leaning trees:

In flat ground: B.H. is measured along the tree stem and not vertically on the side of the lean of the trees.

On slopy ground: Measure from the uphill side along the leaning side of tree stem but not vertically.

4.       Abnormal trees: B.H. mark should be shifted little up or down as little as possible to a more normal position of stem and diameter is measured.
5.       Forked trees: If tree is forked above B.H., consider it as a single tree. If tree is forked below the B.H., each fork should be treated as separate tree. If forking renders the B.H. point abnormal, foregoing rule should be applied and the tree is counted as one or two depending on the place of measurement.
6.       Buttressed trees: B.H. of the tree with aerial root / buttress formation is measured by shifting B.H. mark at the lowest point above which abnormal formation is not likely to extend.
