Height Measurement

The total height of standing tree is the straight-line distance from the tip of the leading shoot (or from the highest point of the crown where there is no leader) to the ground level usually measured on slopes from uphill side of the tree. Beside total height, other heights measured on trees are:

1.Bole Height: It is the distance between the ground level and Crown Point. Crown Point is the position of the first crown forming living or dead branch.

2.Standard Timber Bole Height: It is the distance from the ground level to the point where average diameter over bark is 20 cm.

3.Crown Length: It is the distance between the crown tip and the point halfway between the green branches forming the green crown all round and the lowest green branch on the bole.

4.Crown Height: It is obtained by subtracting crown length from the total height of the tree.

5.Commercial Bole Height: It is the height of the bole usually fit for utilization as timber.
