WHITE STORK  (Ciconia ciconia):

 

Status: CITES Appendix I,                  IUCN    R,              NPWC Act Schedule I

Distribution:
National: The east Asian subspecies (Ciconia ciconia boyciana) winters in Nepal.

Global: Kashmir, Nepal, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Distinctive Characters: An all white bird with black flight feather and dark trailing edge of wings. Pointed bright red bill and red legs can be seen from distance. The tail is white. It is a large bird with a length of 102 cms.

Habitat: Found in the tropical zone, with wintering habitat consists of marshlands and fallow, wet agricultural fields in or near the plains. Found at an elevation of 300 meters.

Habit: The shy bird feeds upon small reptiles and amphibians, as well as small rodents and fish or crustaceans.

Threat: Low breeding population and loss of breeding habitat.
