Red-breasted Flycatcher - A new bird for Nepal

Badri Chaudhary, Som GC, Tika Giri and Dr. Hem Sagar Baral of Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) have recorded a new bird Red-breasted Flycatcher (Ficedula parva) for the first time in Nepal.

The bird, recorded in riverine forests along the eastern embankment of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, is believed to be only a rare passage migrant and scarce winter visitor to Nepal in low numbers.

The flycatcher breeds in Europe and North Asia and winters marginally in Afghanistan, all over Pakistan and mainly in northwest India.

The new species has increased the total number of bird species found in Nepal to 862.
