Rearranging trees in the landscape in the Middle Hills of Nepal

This chapter challenge the view that Nepali farmers had been forced into a situation through which they were destroying the resources upon which they depend for survival and the lack of knowledge to appreciate the dimensions of the deforestation problem or the ability to do anything to address these problems. Some of the ways in which farmers have reacted positively to changes in the availability of tree products and the extent of their indigenous knowledge about trees and their management are described. The results of several detailed studies from districts which span the hills region from the west to eastern-central Nepal are used for illustration.
