Abstract

Plant tissue culture was initiated in the National Herbarium and Plant Laboratories, Godawari, Department of Plant Resources in 1976. In the beginning callus initiation and its subsequent development was achieved from the culture of Rauwolfia serpentina [Rauvolfia serpentina] seedlings. Since no alkaloid was detected in the R. serpentina calli, this work was discontinued. Attempts were then made to generate orchid plants from seed culture and meristem culture. A brief note on orchid cultureis presented. From the early 1980s efforts were directed to address the problem of high production cost of tissue culture plants. In this regard sand rooting of microshoots of various floricultural, horticultural, forestry and medicinal plants were developed. A substantial reduction in production cost of tissue culture plants using sand rooting technique will be presented.
