The complex nature of farmers' dependency on forest products demands a holistic approach to the long-term goal of sustainable community forest management. The Nepal Agroforestry Foundation (NAF) was initially formed to promote agroforestry as a method of reducing pressure on degraded forest areas. A home nursery training programme has been developed in which further training and incentives are provided to selected individuals to enable the expansion of the programme within target communities. NAF consults with forest user groups (FUG)s and local NGOs on selection and monitoring of target areas. Women's agroforestry groups are formed from nursery trainees. NAF has developed these groups into savings and credit associations and is encouraging the establishment of a network of co-operatives through inter- group associations. These co-operatives will constitute a bridge between the individual concerns of women's group members and the community activities of FUGs. By providing training in management, marketing and skills at the appropriate level, NAF aims to create an institutional framework wherein FUGs become accountable to their individual members and gain financial benefit from sustainable management of forest products. These efforts will address the constraints encountered and encourage further development of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs).
