The thirteen papers in this volume of the conference concern the Terai area of Nepal, an alluvial piedmont plain at the base of the Himalayas, 60-300 m altitude. The region is heavily traversed by the major river systems of Nepal and the vegetation consists of Dalbergia sissoo, Shorea robusta and Eucalyptus forests, interspersed with riparian and floodplain savanna grassland. Much of the area has now been converted to agriculture. The management and nature conservation of Terai grasslands is discussed, in some cases with reference to studies carried out in Uttar Pradesh, India.
