AbstractThe objectives of the Annapurna Conservation Area project (ACAP) in Nepal are described. Under this project, local people were not only allowed to live in the protected area, but were also empowered to manage and use the local resources. Efforts have been made to empower the local people in conservation initiatives, with the advantage of linking resources management to both forest conservation and community development. Villagers have been encouraged to take responsibility for their resources and this has resulted in an increased sense of pride and ownership of their resources. With regards to tourism, it attracts tourists who are tolerant and interested in experiencing small scale, locally operated accommodations built by the local people as managers, interpreters, and custodians of protected areas because of their accumulated knowledge handed down over the centuries.
