| Abstract | This book provides a detailed survey of the ethnobotany of Nepal. It describes the uses of 1517 plants belonging to 858 genera and 195 families. It has 4 chapters covering the land (emergence of Nepal, geography, climate, vegetation zones, history of plant collecting in Nepal and conservation), the people (ethnic communities, languages and religions), the ethnobotany (history of ethnobotanical research in Nepal, plants in animal husbandry and agriculture, food and beverage plants, medicinal plants, bamboo and other fibre plants, other uses of plants, and Nepalese folklore) and the useful plants of Nepal. This last chapter, illustrated with line drawings, forms the major part of the book and is based on field data collected over 3 decades. Plants are arranged alphabetically by their scientific names, with information on their vernacular names, a brief description including details of habitat and distribution, and food, medicinal and other uses. Appendices lists plants according to use and plants according to ethnic community. There is a glossary and also indexes to common and scientific names. |
