| Abstract | The constrained least squares method is proposed as an algorithm for projecting stand tables through time. This method consists of 3 steps: (1) predict survival in each diameter class, (2) predict diameter growth, and (3) use the least squares (LS) approach to adjust the stand table to satisfy the constraints of future survival, average diameter and stand basal area. The new constrained LS method was evaluated against the Weibull parameter- recovery approach and a stand table projection method developed earlier (Nepal, S. K.; Somers, G. L. Forest Science (1992) 38 (1) 120-133) using data from direct-sown stands of loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda ) in Louisiana, USA. The constrained LS method provided the best goodness-of-fit statistics (K-S, χ2, and an error index), and these were significantly different from those produced by the other 2 methods. This new algorithm can be employed in cases where diameter data do not necessarily follow the Weibull distribution. |
