This book is a pioneering work on the politics and ecology of Himalayan Tarai. The eco systems here are highly dynamics as also productive, may be one of the highest in the country. Many a times during the British period efforts were made to colonize it for agricultural purposes. But all these efforts failed owing to the vagaries of climate and the scourge of malaria. With the coming of Independence, a wave of settlers from West Pakistan and East Pakistan came to settle down in Tarai and with these new settlers dawned a new era of permanent settlement in this region.
