| Abstract | Maintaining the productivity and diversity in forest communities involves enhancing the growth of forest using biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and considering the role of some biotechnologies. Some of the inputs of N into forests and impact of BNF are reviewed. The importance of actinorhizal plants in this role is highlighted. In addition, some recent findings on the relationships between actinorhizal plants ( Coriaria arborea with Pinus radiata ) and their Frankia endophytes are provided. Finally, some estimates of the amount of N that can come from BNF are given, with special reference to Coriaria . |
