Abstract

After a brief literature review of the occurrence of noctuids on bamboos in other Asian countries, descriptions are given of the life cycle and pattern of damage caused by the insects, and of the susceptibility of different species and extent of damage in Nepal. The shoot borers found in Nepal are from the genus Pareuplexia and cause damage to an estimated 10% of new shoots annually, although management practices in operation control the pests to a certain degree; further measures are suggested. The most severely damaged species is Dendrocalamus hamiltonii.
