| Abstract | A brief review of recent trends in research related to soil conservation, and their implications, with an account of the nature and functions of agroforestry and its potential for soil conservation. The principal agroforestry practices are listed and those which have been recommended for, or proven to have a role in, controlling erosion or augmenting soil fertility are further discussed. These include: barrier hedges; trees on soil conservation works; alley cropping; tree gardens; plantation crop combinations; trees or shrubs on pastures or cropland; shelterbelts; biomass transfer (the carrying of plant litter from communal forest land onto cropland, e.g. in Nepal); and controlled or planted fallow. |
