Trees on small farms. Multipurpose tree species research for the arid and semi-arid tropics. Proceedings of the Network Workshop of the Forestry/Fuelwood Research and Development(F/FRED) Project held November 16-19, 1987 in Karachi, Pakistan

The objectives of this workshop were to: introduce the F/FRED Project to potential network participants; present and discuss ongoing research on multipurpose trees and social science in the arid and semi-arid tropics; and prepare plans for future network activities. There were some 115 participants from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia, China and the USA. After keynote and opening addresses, five papers were presented, and there were presentations on multipurpose tree species (MPTS) research in Pakistan (Sheikh, M.I.), India (Yadav, J.S.P. ), Sri Lanka (Vivekanandan, K.) and Nepal (Prajapati, K.P.), and on germplasm resources in Pakistan (Siddiqui, K.M.) and Australia (Midgley, S.J.). The papers were: Lessons and results from establishment of the humid and sub-humid zone network (MacDicken, K.G.; Taylor, D.A.); The social science component of the F/FRED Project (Mehl, C.B.); Global research and network experiment design: an overview (Cady, F.B.; Taylor, D.A.); Towards a socioeconomic database on small farm use of MPTS (Bajracharya, D.); and Present and prospective uses of tree species in India's semi-arid tropics (Walker, T.S.).
