| Abstract | The present paper gives in overview on the present and potential natural regeneration Sal forests (Shorea robusta, Gaerth.) in Nepal. Two types of Sal Forests such as i. Hill Sal-forest and ii. Terai Sal forest are found in Nepal. The Sal is a dominant tree species of the Terai Forest. The die back of natural Sal regeneration has been a quite common phenomenon in India. On the contrary, in Nepal, the studies indicate a good natural Sal regeneration and growth of Sal seedlings, at least in the studies indicate a good natural Sal regeneration and growth of Sal seedlings, at least in the Terai region; There is no much data available of the Hill Sal forest. In the Terai forest, the average number of Sal seedlings was recorded to be more than10.000 seedlings/ha. The field trial plots, although based on only a short-term period, indicate a good establishment of Sal seedlings. It is concluded that if the forest can be protected from biotic factors and fire, there is no problem of seedlings establishment in Nepal. The average heights measured were 50 cm of 5 years;old seedlings, penetrating their roots up tc, Im deep in the soil. Furthermore, the future management strategies for sustainable Sal forest utilisation are also described. |
