| Abstract | During a visit June in 1992 to Surkhet District, Nepal, it was observed that Shorea robusta (sal) was being severely infested by insect pests. Infested sal poles were about 12-15 m tall and 8-10 cm diameter at breast height. Some twigs collected from Kaker Bihar were easily broken. Investigations revealed a common borer, Hoplocerambyx spinicornis, in the heartwood. Young crops of sal were also being attacked by defoliators at various other locations. The pest responsible for the attacks was identified as a grasshopper, Aularches sp. Such defoliators also attack other species such as Murraya koenigii. |
