| Abstract | Dichloromethane, methanol and 50% aqueous methanol extracts of 13 plants were screened for activity against 6 bacteria and Candida maltosa using a modified disc-diffusion method. Growth of C. maltosa was only inhibited by the dichloromethane and methanol extracts of Zanthoxylum armatum (MIC values 500 and 1000 micro g/disc, respectively). Both extracts, as well as the methanol extract of Rhododendron anthopogon showed weak activity against Gram-negative bacteria (MICs 500-2000 micro g/disc). Most extracts were active against the Gram-positive bacteria, particularly the dichloromethane extract of Maharanga bicolor (MIC value 0.25 micro g/disc). |
