AbstractSample cores were collected in 1994 from a site in the central Himalaya in western Nepal: 8 Betula utilis , 1 Abies spectabilis , 2 Juniperus sp., 5 Picea smithiana and 3 Pinus wallichiana samples. A B. utilis chronology was built up for the period 1734 to 1994. Longevity, high sensitivity, and a low percentage of missing rings (0.35%) make this species suitable for dendrochronology. Spectral analysis indicated 5-6, 10-11 and 25-yr fluctuations: a 3.85- cycle was ascribed to endogenous rhythms. Thirty-year results indicate that the period 1940 to 1970 exhibited characteristics perhaps the result of human disturbances. Juniperus sp. samples exhibited some anomalous features more clearly than the other conifer species examined.
