About Me:

My research interests:

The current scale of deforestation and the massive land degradation in tropical regions underscore the urgent need for intervention to restore biodiversity and ecological functioning, and also to control the atmospheric carbon emission. On the top of that an intervention is needed to restore the supply of goods and ecological services previously used by poor rural communities. These facts have actually motivated me towards learning the human-ecosystem interface.
More specifically, I am interested in linking the ecological services-based poor's livelihood to a resilient forest ecosystem. Therefore, my future research will be directed towards identifying the trade-offs between forest ecosystem and livelihood patterns of poor people with novel restoration mechanism so as to balance between the population growth and ecosystem resilience, as well as to avoid the deforestation in the Tropics so as to check the atmospheric carbon emission.

Key words: Ecosystem based forest management; Sustainable use of forests; Forest based livelihood strategy; Species diversity and regeneration; Tropical deforestation; Community forestry and governance; Payments for environment services (PES); Reducing emission from deforestation and degradation (REDD)

Academic Background:

PhD in Forest Management (2005-2009) from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden:

My four-year PhD deals with the 'type of' and 'frequency of' anthropogenic disturbances and their combined effects on ecosystem functioning in Nepalese sub-tropical deciduous forests. With broad framework of 'non-equilibrium theory', I tried to quantify the changes in species diversity, regeneration, population structure, species' spatial pattern, species composition and community dominance along with changes in disturbance magnitude. My PhD, I believe, is able to answer the foremost questions of ecological restoration-Whether or not the given forest ecosystem is functioning? how far the given ecosystem has deviated from the original state? what next is needed to rehabilitate the ecosystem functioning?
M.Sc. in Tropical Forestry and Management (2001-2003) from Technical University of Dresden, Germany:
My M.Sc. research provides evidence in favor of the hypothesis that socio-economic inequalities within the group are inexorably associated with the ability of the households in resource use.
B.Sc. in Forestry (1991-1994) from Tribhuvan University, Nepal:
My B. Sc. project characterizes the social attributes of forest users and discusses the appropriateness of community forestry in the Terai region of Nepal.

Professional Experience:

I possess more than fifteen years of research and managerial experience in plant ecology and forestry development. Specifically, my past responsibilities include researcher, manager, adviser, trainer on landscape-level forest ecology, forest management, biodiversity monitoring and community forestry in various nationally as well as internationally based academic, administrative, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
