Kathmandu University, School of Science announces a position for PhD research scholar. Candidates keen to conduct research on "forest restoration and alternative land uses on forest and soil carbon pools, fluxes and sequestration" and earn a PhD degree from Kathmandu University are encouraged to apply.
Main eligibility criteria:
- M.Sc. from a recognized University in Forestry, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Biology/Biodiversity or other related natural science fields; with minimum 17 years of formal education,
- Prior field and laboratory research experience in related disciplines will be a distinct advantage.
- Keen interest to conduct research and high level of motivation, as well as, independent working capacity is a must.
- Candidates must not be over the age limit of 40 years.
Research Objectives of the Study:
The overall objective of the study is to analyze the effects of forest restoration and alternative land use on forest and soil carbon pools, fluxes and sequestration as well as potential to support climate change adaptive strategies of rural communities in Nepal.
The specific objectives are:
- To review the relevant studies on land use and its changes, forest and soil degradation, and, carbon dynamics in the Himalayan region, In general, and Nepal in particular, establishing the relationship between changes in land use, forest and soil degradation and carbon stocks and fluxes.
- To evaluate the effects afforest restoration and alternate land use (e.g., agroforestry with high value medicinal and aromatic plants) on biomass and soil carbon pools and fluxes and their implications for livelihood security, carbon sequestration and climate change.
- To recommend climate change adaptive strategies and policy implications for increased carbon sequestration contributing to mitigation of climate change.
