Floods, landslides and debris flow, avalanches and glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) are traditionally identified as the main water induced disasters in Nepal. Its topographically weak geological formations, active seismic conditions, occasional glacier lake outburst floods, concentrated monsoon rains associated with unscientific land utilizations have roles to play for inducing water related disaster in Nepal. Lately, with the changing climate the impact of these disasters have been aggravated adversely affecting water bodies, hydrological regimes, natural ecosystems and livelihood. Nepal, with complex topography and low level of development of protection mechanism, is ranked fourth in vulnerability index of climate change, and 30th in flood risks. In the wake of climate change and increasing population, the country demands for more urgent action for reducing the water disasters and its adverse effects. For this both short term and long term strategies are necessary. Some water disaster mitigation works are already underway but they need to be strengthened with the cutting edge knowledge for effective implementation of the ongoing program and bringing more scientific newer ones.

Objectives

The major objective of the seminar is to bring researchers, professionals and academicians in one platform for sharing and discussing latest information and knowledge in the field of water induced disaster. The seminar will be vital in exacting the role of climate change in water induced disaster through wider level discussion and finding scientific ways for effective mitigation programs. The organizers firmly believe that such type of activities enhance the knowledge base of all the participants which ultimately translate into better planning and execution of disaster risk reduction methods.
