In Pakistan especially in Province Punjab, it is difficult for agrofarmers to evaluate existing traditional farming systems and forestry practices to combine the local knowledge and modern scientific methods and terminology. This requires an evaluation of local/indigenous soil classification in simple terms along with knowledge of local flora especially trees. This study focuses on land suitability classification for trees which is developed by the help of local farmers of district Bahawalpur. A survey was conducted which included interviews of local agrofarmers as well as standard soil analysis including both chemical and physical determinations of local soil types. An evaluation of the soil types for cultivation of various crops was carried out according to its total extent, component soils series and their proportion, spotting characteristics of each soil series, their major limitations / hazards for tree/crops and leading to the identification of the various tree species according to soil characteristic. These information were marked on land suitability map of choice of trees species, prepared by using GIS software and the area was marked according to the soil types and species. This classification will help the local agroforester/agrofarmers and all those interested in planting of trees on their farm lands in matching suitable agriculture crops for different soils in the area. The resources available to the agroforester would be used properly and diligently without wastage of the time and money. It would help in identifying the land management alternatives and evaluate the land use for a meaningful assessment.
