Vegetative propagation of fodder trees. Preliminary research results and practical recommendations

A summary of work in Nepal, describing research at the Forest Research and Information Centre (Hetauda and Kathmandu valley nurseries) on hardwood cuttings and stool beds, and work carried out by various other organizations (the Farm Forestry Project at the Institute of Forestry in Hetauda; and the Pakhribas and Lumle nurseries). Practical recommendations are given on the establishment and management of fodder tree stool beds, and on methods for rooting hardwood stem cuttings. Lists are given of species/genera reported to root from cuttings, and of species successfully rooted at the Hetauda nursery. Nine species which root easily (Brassaiopsis glomerulata, Brassaiopsis hainla, Buddleja asiatica, Erythrina arborescens, Erythrina stricta, Ficus lacor, Garuga pinnata, Leucosceptrum canum and Morus alba) are listed separately indicating their altitudinal ranges; these are recommended for the establishment of nursery fodder tree stool beds.
