Abstract

A village in Eastern Nepal is the setting for a successful forest development project which involved not the handing over of forest to a community but the formation of a self-help group to afforest private land which is used for open-access grazing. This group is made up of both landowners and non-landowners, and tree planting has benefited both groups. This article argues that the project provides a demonstration of the potential of private planting which has both national and international importance.
