AbstractThe in vitro inhibitory effects of 2 resveratrol oligomers, sophorastilbene A and (+)-α-viniferin, isolated from S. moorcroftiana roots (collected from Jomsom, Nepal) on lipid peroxidation by superoxide anion were studied. Both compounds inhibited lipid peroxidation by superoxide anion and generation of superoxide anion by the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system. The inhibitory effects of sophorastilbene A were stronger than those of (+)-α-viniferin on lipid peroxidation by superoxide anion and generation of superoxide anion by the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system. The differences in inhibitory effects depended on a double bond at 7c-8c of resveratrol oligomer. Their effects on superoxide dismutase as a superoxide anion scavenger were similar. These results demonstrate that these resveratrol oligomers have inhibitory effects on oxidative stress.
