Current Forestry Projects in Nepal

Spread over an area of 1,148 sq km of the Himalayan ecological zone of the Khumbu region of Nepal, the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) includes the upper catchment areas of Dudhkoshi and Bhotekoshi rivers and is largely composed of rugged terrain and gorges in the high Himalayas.

Manaslu Conservation Area (MCA), declared on28 December 1998, is the third and the youngest conservation area in Nepal.Nepal Government of Nepal has handed over the management responsibilities to the National Trust for Nature Conservation for the next 10 years. This is the second Conservation area the Trust is managing besides the Annapurna Conservation Area.

This programme is implemented in the western hilly districts Kaski and Parbat of Nepal. The project has given major emphasis to empower and build the capacity of local people in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating of forest/watershed resources in an equitable and sustainable basis.

The Project helped to establish a 4,150 ha plantation in Nepal to reforest heavily degraded forestland. It included for the first time the introduction of large-scale planting of exotic species such as Eucalyptus camaldulensis.

The project aim is to improve livelihoods of the local population through rehabilitation and sustainable use of the Churia forests. Most of Nepal's Churia Forests between the gangetic plain and the hill region are degraded due to overuse and encroachment by the growing population.
