Disposable vapes. Love them or hate them, they have become a staple of our modern society. It seems everywhere you go you see little corner shops selling a wide variety of colorful tubes chock full of nicotine liquid. But how did disposable vapes become such a huge thing? And is our obsession with them a force for good? Or are they causing more issues than they were supposedly meant to solve?
How Vaping Began
To understand how disposable vapes became so popular, we first have to look at the world of vaping as a whole. How did vaping even come about? We need to turn our attention towards the world of smoking.
Vaping began as a method to help smoking addicts get themselves clean. Over the last fifty years or so we have been looking for new ways to help people stop smoking. Once we realized just how unhealthy smoking is. Nicotine gum. Nicotine patches. Various forms of medication and addiction therapies. All of these methods were effective, but they didn’t address one of the main addictive habits related to smoking. And that was the physical act of smoking itself.
What we mean by this is that the ritual of actually taking a drag of a cigarette, along with all the social aspects smoking provides, is very addictive. The term ‘social smoker’ is one that is thrown around alot. So in the early 2000’s we saw the introduction of e-cigarettes. The first iteration of what would become a vape.
They were small capsules that contained small amounts of nicotine in the form of a liquid that was vaporized when sucked on. This allowed addicts to get their nicotine fix and still experience the act of smoking, but without any of the additional toxins contained in cigarettes.
The Vaping Industry Boom
It didn’t take long for companies around the world to start capitalizing on the growing e-cigarette trend. And with that came a wave of innovation. This is when we saw the start of modern vapes. The larger machines that came with refillable tanks. And to take it a step further, companies started producing flavored liquids as well. Fast forward a few years and you now have a huge range of e-liquids available. In all sorts of flavors and with different levels of nicotine content. Many companies produced large bottles of flavored liquid with no nicotine in it. And then customers could choose to add nicotine to it with products like the nicotine shots from mistervape.
And this did help a lot of people quit smoking. Addicts could switch to a vape with nicotine in it and gradually reduce their e-liquid nicotine content until it reached zero. But, as with smoking, vaping began to become trendy. And this is where the issues started. And where we saw the rise of disposable vapes.
Disposable Vapes And Fashion
Disposable vapes, as the name implies, are one use vapes that can’t be refilled. They are smaller, more concealable, and easier to find than the standard vapes. Many corner shops and supermarkets started stocking them alongside their cigarettes.
Disposable vapes saw their rise around the same time that TikTok became popular. And, by this time, vaping was growing more common amongst the younger generations. Which was a massive issue in some regards. Vaping was intended to help people move away from the world of smoking. But it could be said that vaping, and especially disposable vapes, suddenly made this world more fashionable to the younger generation.
And this was a huge issue because it was far easier for young people to buy vapes. Whereas cigarettes had a strict age requirement to them, buying a vape online was as simple as a few clicks. Now this isn’t such an issue considering that you can get a lot of nicotine free e-liquids for standard vapes.
But disposable vapes often always contain nicotine. You have to specifically go out of your way to find nicotine free disposable vapes. And with disposable vapes suddenly becoming very common on TikTok and other social media apps, young people were suddenly becoming hooked on nicotine far sooner than they ever might have.
Positive Or Negative
It might seem like the obsession with disposable vapes is all negative. But there are some positives to them. They are great for people trying to quit smoking. A normal vape is a bit more of a money investment. Whereas a smoker who is on the edge of quitting could invest a few dollars into one disposable vape and then be done with it.
But overall we would say that the obsession with disposable vapes is mostly negative. They are generally worse for you than a normal vape. And there are a lot of cheap knock-off disposable vapes on the market now that are borderline dangerous.
